I have lived in Santa Rosa, for most of my life, moving here at an early age from Vallejo. I have always loved art and have been painting since 1996, starting with oils and acrylics, but quickly changing to watercolor as my medium of choice. From the time I started painting, I have taken classes and gone to workshops locally, and continue to paint in a private workshop on a weekly basis. I have a very supportive husband, Rich, who I have been married to for thirty-seven years, and we have three children Jennifer, Scott and Dave. Our oldest daughter, Jennifer and her husband Dean Ketelsen have a 3-year-old son, Brenden, a one-year-old daughter, Kelsey and Dean’s thirteen-year-old daughter, Courtney. Scott and his wife Jessica have a four year old son, Sean, and a two year old daughter, Rachel. Dave, our youngest son, is attending Santa Rosa Junior College.
Watercolor painting is my passion, and I find that I totally relax and become stress free when I paint. I am constantly trying new methods, and techniques to help me become a better artist. Being able to share my work with others in shows and galleries is wonderful, and when I sell my work I have a real feeling of accomplishment. I love what I do, and I hope that is reflected in my work.
I have been fortunate enough to take classes and be part of workshops with excellent instructors: Kathryn Cerasoli, Judy Greenberg, Terry Madden, Birgit O’Conner, Robert Dvorak, Barbara Jeffery Clay, Betsy Dillard Stroud, Lian Quan Zhen, Christopher Schenk and Tony Couch.
Some exhibitions that I have had include: Finley Center, Copperfield Café, Gallery One in Petaluma, Steele Lane Recreation and Parks Center, Aqua Areas in Coddingtown, Chicago Title in Windsor and Santa Rosa, Empire Optical/Empire Eye Doctors, Gualala Art Show, Showcase Artists at Plaza Art in Healdsburg, Narsi’s in Coddingtown, and Montgomery Village Art Show. I have also been part of the Sonoma County Fair, Harvest Fair and Duncans Mills Festival winning many first, second and third place ribbons as well as a Best of Show.
I am a member of WASCO, CWA and NWS, and I enjoy the creative support that I receive from those affiliations.

“I fell in love with watercolor in 1985 and since then it has been my main ‘media’. In 1991 I moved to Healdsburg, California with my husband and our then 3-year-old son. Healdsburg is a small community in Sonoma Country’s wine country. We lived there from 1991 to 2007. During that time, I was active in many art organizations, and galleries and taught watercolor classes. When our youngest child graduated from high school and set out to attend college we decided to sell our house of fifteen years, buy a 53ft sailboat and find adventure. During that time not only did we experience great adventures but also we visited many exciting countries and made some very interesting friends.
I painted frequently on the boat. Many of my paintings that were created during that time were of distant shores and the people and animals that we encountered. I loved painting during that time because I didn’t have to paint for a gallery or a demonstration. I could relax and paint for myself. Too my surprise my painting skills improved because of this freedom.
In June of 2010, we stopped sailing and reestablished our connections in Healdsburg. I still try hard to convey a personal feeling and a private message to those who view my art. Most of my paintings are about ‘pattern’. I love design, color, and texture. I try to incorporate these items in my paintings, along with my love of traveling and foreign cultures.”

Paula L. Peterson
Paula has been making and selling art all her life, and painting in watercolor for more than 20 years. She has studied with many local and national artists, and has come to love mixed media as well. Paula currently hosts workshops in “Soul Painting,” a wonderful, meditative form of art-play.
A member of Watercolor Artists of Sonoma County (WASCO), Paula’s first and best love is painting plein aire in watercolor, ‘where time stops and the painting is all there is.’ More recently, she has been working with mosaics in a process called “Pique Assiette.” Literally translated, it means plate thief and relies on tesserae (mosaic bits) from broken china and crockery.”…

“My artistic life has been enriched by studying the details of things around me. Having been fortunate to have lived in many lovely places, I learned that things of great beauty are in the eyes of the beholder, not necessarily just n museums. When I began to paint with watercolors in 1996, it was a new means of expressing the common objects found in daily life.”
