Joe
Gerber is a retired college instructor, who worked at Santa Rosa
Junior College from 1964 to 1995 where he taught Parapsychology
and the Psychology of Creativity. Graduating from the University
of San Francisco, he went on to earn two Master's Degrees, one from
Sonoma State College, and the other from San Francisco State University.
He then received his Doctoral Degree in Educational Psychology from
the University of California at Berkeley.
Joe began
painting in the 1950's after his service years during which he served
as a Merchant Marine Officer during World War II and later in the
US Army in Korea. He visited Japan, Korea, and pre-communist China.
It was during this time that he developed a deep and abiding interest
in Asian philosophy and art, which has greatly influenced his approach
it painting. In the summer of 1980, he returned to Japan to study
Zen while staying at Doshisha University in Kyoto. His earlier works
were done in oils but he now works in watercolor, acrylics, and
Sumi-e.
He continues
to give private painting lessons to beginning an intermediate painters
at his studio in Santa Rosa. Among the courses taught are "The
Zen of Watercolor", "Acrylics on Watercolor Paper or Canvass"
and "the Use of Jungian Archetypes and Taro Symbolism in the
Creative Process". These classes are limited to no more than
two participants at a time. You may arrange for lessons by appointment
