Joan
Espinosa
"I
use art as a means of expressing a joyful feeling I experience when
I draw and paint. My work is always inspired by the subject in some
way, no matter what it is. For me, all subjects become portraits,
whether it is a person, a cat, a doorway, or a pot of flowers. Watercolor
and the pen and ink line have long been my chosen media, because
they lend themselves so well to spontaneity and because I like being
able to "say a lot" with a single line.
As a native
San Franciscan, I won a citywide contest for a portrait drawing
at the age of fourteen. I have been studying, drawing and painting
in a variety of visual art disciplines ever since. I moved to New
York when I was 21 and continually turned to art while working in
other fields. Eventually I returned to the bay area and now I live
in wine country, where my love of painting has been awakened once
again."
